MARYLAND SUFFRAGE MEWS 105 effective, the police of this district sent to court about fourteen cases, re- sulting in twelve convictions, one acquittal and one mistrial. In a period of nearly three and one-half years in work in Baltimore city among the inmates of these houses there did not come to my attention cases exaggerated to the extent as presented in current fiction, on the mov- ing-picture screen or on the stage. The aforegoing article is founded upon conditions which have come under my notice as a practicing attorncy-at-law and a police justice, and was written in the hope that my readers would take home this serious question and devise and enact some plan whereby these shyster lawyers, if possible, would be driven out of business: that a law might be framed changing the procedure in the hearing of petitions for alimony pending litigation; and that a Domestic Relations Court might be established with a proper presiding officer to keep intact many a home that otherwise would be broken. I was sincere in my endeavor to give a better understanding as to the white slave question; and in conclusion I want to impress upon all my readers that this is a real work for women and everyone else inter- ested in social uplift. I know what women can do. I have always be- lieved women more than men exemplify Cardinal Richelieu's saying, "There is no such word as fail."
