bill of sale 13 November 1848 In 1848, Digges purchased Enoch who was to
serve until 25 October 1856 and then be set free. The slave was a perpetual
runaway, a person "very bad character," and, according to the master, a
"rogue". Under a law permitting owners to sell "notoriously vicious or
turbulent" blacks, even those promised their freedom, Digges was granted
