Journal Entry for 1997/07/09

Today has been frustrating, after the wealth of information last week. I need to reorient myself and decide what needs to be accomplished. First, a few facts that I have found from today's relatively unlucky search.

1. The Mary Magee listed in the Parish Records of St. Paul's as d. 1878 is not the daughter of Joseph Clark, although her age and other information is close. That individual's birthplace is listed as Ireland. This woman is also the women listed as a widow on Gough St. in the City Directory from 1850-1870.

2. Although St. Paul's listed Stephen Clark as d. July 13, 1825 and the city directory entries correspond to this date, there is no Stephen Clark listed in the Baltimore County Inventory Index, Wills Index, or Administration Account. Yet, he clearly has slaves as indicated from his record in the 1820 Census Index and the St. Paul's Parish Refister which lists his slave Sara had a son.

3. Ironically, Luther Martin owns a slave named Isabella Clark. Thought Dr. Papenfuse might appreciate that fact in light of the controversy. I have not been able to uncover any court cases involving Joseph Clark and McCreery in the General Court of the Western Shore Judgements. Although we had speculated that Joseph Clark referred to Luther Martin in the Petition for Insolvency, I reread Mary Magee's claim and she made the claim seem much more substantive then the article we think it might be suggests

"her Father Substantiated this claim agaist the State & Left it to be Transacted by an Attorney, but during his absenseMr. Luther Martin (then Attorney General) who had long beena t personal Enmity with her father Barrd - the Claim pleadingthe act of limitation on the return of her Father he publicly charged Mr. Martin in the papers of having been more governed byprivate pique against him then Zeal in performing his duty To the Sate. This produced a newspaper war which lasted nearly thewhole winter and in april 1798- "

As a result, I will go back to the Pratt and see if I can find anymore info in the papers that I might have missed during my last visit.

4. Speaking of Mary, I found an intersting tidbit. A Mary Sprarrow Clarke marries David Chalmers in 1806 according to the St. Paul Parish Records. I was hoping to find something that talked about him dying and the Mary S. Chalmers marrying a Magge but I have not turned up anything. As for the Sarah Anderson Warfield daughter of Dr. Warfield and Jane Clark I did find out that a Dr. Anderson Warfield lived in Anne Arundel County and moved to Baltimore (but the move was way after Jane's death). He died in 1828 at the age of 53. I do not know if any of this is revelant but I wanted it recorded somewhere in the notes. See Mr. Barnes note about Mary Magee. My conclusiona about Mary Sparrow were erroneous. [AMT 7/11/97]
